World of Darkness MMO cancelled

I have recently read over on Eurogamer that CCP the developers of the MMO EVE have finally closed the coffin lid permanently on their Vampire MMO World of Darkness.  It had been in development for quite some time over in Atlanta Georgia since 2007 when it was first announced.

Many gamers out there today may not even be aware of the World of Darkness created by White Wolf Publishing back in the late 90's.  It was a very dark, gritty vampire setting that went more for the political and mature tone of vampires instead of the love stories and sparkly skin that more modern takes on the genre have gone for today.  It was a good system that had plenty of material for players to use over the years before it was closed down and reborn as the current Vampire the Masquerade seen today.

All the potential was there for a truly mature MMO game, it had not only vampires but Werewolves, Mummies, Ghosts, Warlocks, Demons, Fey and your average ordinary human in way over their head.  Those staff who have been laid off are wished the usual "thanks for working for us, but fuck off now we don't need you" speech from CCP head Hilmar Veigar P├ętursson, while the few lucky developers get to work on EVE with the main studio so it's double shit sandwich and chips for those guys.

No doubt there will be rumours flying about regarding the reason the studio failed, I imagine the popular one will be a lack of funds to keep three games running concurrently while others will likely blame the studio in Atlanta for not producing the goods.  Myself I see it as a cost cutting measure really.  Game development is hideously expensive at the best of times and creating an MMO more so.  CCP have decided to focus entirely on what works and in this case it's their own baby.  I would suggest they close down their DUST 514 developer in Singapore given that game is now relying on PS3 owners to support it when PS4 will soon have not only Planetside 2 owned by Sony, but also the much anticipated free to play shooter Destiny in September.  Maybe CCP could port their troubled shooter to the PC but I doubt it despite the call by PC players.

Who knows with the CCP fanfest coming up soon maybe there will be some big updates and announcements going forward.  Still it's a pity about the World of Darkness MMO because it could have been one hell of a game world to run around in.
