Star Wars X-Wing - Character and Ship Guide - TIE Phantom

Now I will admit my knowledge of the Phantom is fairly limited.  My first experience of any cloaking TIE design was in Rebel Assault II a long time ago.  I never rated the fighter much compared to the likes of the Defender or TIE advanced.  Of course the fighter has tonnes of potential as a hit and run fighter using it's stygian cloaking system and healthy number of laser cannons.

I can see a squadron of these fighters becoming very effective in a straight up fight.  However it could also be the Imperial players ace in the hole in a more mixed engagement where being able to avoid fire for a turn means victory.

Faction: Galactic Empire
Name: TIE Phantom V38
Statistics ÷
Primary Weapon value: 4
Agility: 2
Hull: 2
Shields: 2

Developed shortly after the battle of Yavin the Phantom was based on a V38 assault fighter chassis but heavily modified to carry a hyperdrive unit, shield generator and more importantly a Stygian cloaking device, technology not seen in centuries.  It was completed around the time of the battle of Hoth during the Alliances darkest hours.  Darth Vader originally intended to use them to strike the Rebel fleet and finally put an end to the Rebellion but a series of raids by Rebel forces ended the threat of the Phantom.

The few remaining Phantoms now work as strike craft for special operations and are capable of incredible amounts of fire for such a small craft.  Carrying five laser cannons it can deliver withering fire to a target.  Unusually for a TIE series craft it has a crew of two similar to the Bomber, with a pilot and gunner.  It's most unique aspect is it's cloaking system using the rare Stygian crystals to effectively vanish from both visual and electronic scanning.  Even other Phantoms could not detect cloaked Phantoms.  The most terrifying aspect though was the system allowed the pilot to fire and then cloak once again immediately afterwards, making it near impossible to return fire.

All TIE Phantom pilots are capable of performing the (Focus) (Barrel Roll) (Evade) and (Cloak) actions.

Arguably the most powerful fighter in the Imperial players arsenal the TIE Phantom can decimate Rebel fighters with a single blast of it's weapons doing 4 damage each round potentially.  Of course their most deadly ability is their cloaking system which comes with new rules for the X-Wing game.

Cloaking grants your Phantom a bonus 2 agility making it 4 when cloaked and the next turn it can decloak after performing a maneuver before it's dial is revealed.  All Phantoms bar "echo" can only move forward 2 or barrel roll using the forward 2 template before performing it's chosen dial maneuver.  "Echo" however can choose to bank left or right before coming out of cloak making him a real threat on the field.  Rebel players will need to focus fire early to neutralise the threat of the Phantom but it still has 2 shields to protect it from damage.  Combine this with the collected modification cards from this expansion and you can create a truly lethal fighter for your squadron.
